The Lion King

Our little family had the opportunity to go see "The Lion King."


I didn't tell the kidlets what was going on, they just new that we were going somewhere that they had to dress nice. I even parked in the parking garage without them figuring it out!

It wasn't until we rounded the corner and Piper saw the Marquee that it clicked.

It was a matinee so we met Aaron out there.

We had fantastic seats! Center section on the floor about half-way back.

The kidlets were excited...SO excited.

The opening number set the mood.
Watching Piper and Teague watch the show brought tears to my eyes...literally...When Teague leaned over to Aaron and said, "I think this is going to be the best show I've ever seen!" I knew it was going to be a day to remember.

I'm SO glad that we were able to see it as a family. It was not my favorite show, but costumes, lights, sound and set were amazing and so were the actors...that would be a hard show to do.

Even though it wasn't my favorite show, it will always be one of my favorite memories with my family.

Learning and Realization

The past few months have been nothing short of C-R-A-Z-Y!!

The craziness started in February when I had to 'crew' (for 'Production lab' class) "The Rocky Horror Show." This was when my family realized the commitment I had made to my education. I was gone All. The. Time. I thought when that show was over, I would be back to a regular school schedule...I must have forgotten that I am a Theatre Major.

I had five classes, four were theatre classes. In each one of those classes, I had projects, projects that went way beyond regular homework time: A Set Design Project, that involved learning a computer program..A Sound Design Project, that involved learning a couple of computer programs and tons of searching...AND in one class - Theatre and Theory - I was in a group of six, we made a movie on Feminism, you may have seen it, it was posted on facebook. This was a fun, but not an easy task, it was VERY time consuming. Luckily we got full credit (we totally deserved it).

On top of being a full-time student, I am a full-time Momma. And as most of you know, that is not the easiest job in the world, the most rewarding?
YES!
Easiest?
NO!
Many days I felt like the worst mother EVER!
Many days I wondered if going to school was really worth it.

I guess what I am trying to say is...I've been busy! However, I have learned more than I ever thought I would. I have realized why there are so many people that seem to be professional students - I LOVE it.

I have made some of the greatest friends EVER (sure, I may be 15 years older than them), they are true friends, they are my family away from my family!

They are with me through the tears - because I'm not at home. They are with me through the sleepless nights - because of crazy projects due. They are with me through the crazy days - because I haven't taken my meds for a week. They are with me through study groups when I lose my mind - because of sleepless nights, no meds and being away from my family.

THANKS GUYS!

Something I have always known, but it's always nice to be reminded.

I know that it has been hard on them. Probably harder on them than it has been on me. They are so strong, so supportive, so amazing, so patient.

Temple Open House

On Thursday Night, our little family went to the Oquirrah Mountain Temple Open House. It was beautiful. It is unlike any other Temple I have seen. I LOVE it.

Kennecott

Sort of on a whim, we all went out to Kennecott. When I say 'we all' this means; John, Annie, Aaron, Karlyn, Piper, Teague, Gina, Luda, Morgan, Josh, Zac, Angela, Alex and Seth. John works out there, it was his idea. The kids loved it. It's so funny because all we did was look through the telescope things, see the movie and go to the gift shop. Here are some pictures.

Ice Skating

On Presidents day we decided to go Ice Skating.


It was really fun. Adrian and her boys were there too!

Teague of course is amazing on the ice and none of us could keep up with him.

Piper struggled a bit, but was still great. She only fell a few times.


Piper and I came up with some of our own moves...we call this one "running in place."

We really need to do this more often.

January is boring.....

Today is the last day of January and I noticed that I haven't done any really significant posts. I guess I will just update you on some of the goings on at the Salazar home.

Aaron - Unfortunately is still unemployed, so again, if any of you know of anything, please contact us. He started up his last semester this month, now we are only about two and a half months away from graduation. I can't believe he is going to have and MBA. He's so smart and and has worked so hard for this. I am so incredibly proud of him and how hard he has worked to make this happen. My initial plan was to have a huge party with a keg and a bounce house, but unfortunately we won't have the funds. But, it might still happen, just not when he graduates.

Karlyn - Yeah, pretty much nothing. I did get my acceptance letter to the U, so I will be going back to school after a fourteen year break...I'm nervous, wish me luck. How do you study?

Piper - Well, she and I auditioned for "The Jungle Book" but neither one of us made it. And that is okay, it will be nice to have a break. They had a bunch of people try out, but only about 15 made it and no one under 9, Piper did very well at her audition. I do however have to tell you all to go see this show, it is going to be up at Kingsbury Hall the beginning of April. I support Youth Theatre at the U so much, it is such an incredible program and has done so much for our little family. Classes don't start up again until Feb. 11, so no theatre stuff until then. Classes started back up this month for ballet at Bountiful School of Ballet, she has been dancing there since June of 2004. And she has been begging to go back to guitar lessons, but she is good at guitar and is doing very well without lessons....talented little fart.

Teague - Teague auditioned for Miss Saigon at Pioneer Theatre Company and made it! He will be playing the part of Tam, the 3 year old son! He is a Vietnamese boy, so we will be dying his hair black. He thinks this is pretty funny, he might actually look like a Salazar now. He doesn't start rehearsal until April 6. We don't know which shows he will be doing since it is double cast, I will post that information as soon as we find out. He is also doing Youth Theatre at the U, starting February 11. And of course he has been playing Hockey the entire month, practices on Fridays, games on Saturdays. His game this morning was really fun, he wanted to play goalie the entire time. This is something that I have been afraid of since he started playing hockey....that he would want to be a goalie! Any of you that know hockey know that being the goalie is very expensive, they have to wear extra gear - that is expensive - They have to go to extra practices/workshops to learn how to be a goalie - that is expensive. So, we'll see....crap. Luckily he is only 5 and he has a few years to make up his mind.

So, there is January for you. Hopefully February will be a little more eventful.

December

I hate that my life is crazy in December! With Western Nut I feel like I don't have time to do anything. I thought that I would just give you a quick update on the things that went on in December.

The kidlets had their Theatre School performance or 'open share.' It was so fun to see how far they have come. Teague's class acted out a story about the winter cold and snow and what it does to your body. For example; snow getting in your pants and mucus running down your nose. It was very cute.

Piper's class did "The Share Bears" Piper was Honey face.



Piper's ballet did a small performance. parents just come to class and watch the little Christmas dance that they have been working on.

Teague had a few Hockey practices and a couple of games.

Piper's school class did a little performance, I didn't make it, but Aaron did. They sang Christmas songs as if they were animals.

She is also in the school choir and they had a couple of performances, they all played the ukulele and made it a Hawaiian Christmas, Piper even had a solo, which she nailed!!!


Christmas Eve was spent with Grammie Annie and Grandpa John - again, I was at work, so I didn't make it - We got "Guitar Hero World Tour" from them. Then we met up at Aunt Val's for some more fun. And....we don't have any pictures! We have video.

Christmas Morning was fantastic! The kids didn't wake up until shortly before 9!!! We are blessed with good sleepers. The kids got exactly what they wanted. Teague got a telescope and some Iron man action figures. Piper got a bright yellow ipod and some Littlest Pet Shop. And....I didn't take pictures!!! I KNOW, I can't believe it either. We did film the entire thing though. Aaron and I got each of the kids and outfit. I gave Aaron some pajama bottoms and he gave me "Mama Mia." Piper gave me a watch and some earrings and Teague gave me the "Wicked" soundtrack. Piper gave Aaron "Dracula," the book and Teague gave him some Jack Skellington stuff.

I can actually pull some stills off of the camera from the video, but I am not very computer literate and I can't figure it out!! Trust me, I've tried. And, the videos are far too long. If I do find some pictures or figure it out, I will post them. Same thing with ballet and hockey, but these ones are on my phone.

Christmas day at about 12:30 I was helping Teague get dressed and he looked at me and said, "It hurts really bad!" (to be continued in the next post......)

We met up at my parents house at 2 for ham and a bunch of other yummy food. Unfortunately not all of my brothers (and their families) were there. It was still nice. My mom is a fabulous cook and everything was delicious. And of course all of the grandkids got spoiled rotten. Seriously, what would we do without grandparents?

Christmas night - this is what it looked like outside of my house -

we went over to Aaron's mom's house for a little Guitar Hero.......I'm not sure what to say here except Thank you to John and Annie, or maybe I shouldn't say Thank You. It really is a bad addiction.



My wonderful husband said that he would work at Western Nut the day after Christmas, which was so nice of him since it opened at SEVEN A.M., and everything went SIXTY PERCENT off. Then, that night, the kiosk closed. This is the earliest it has ever closed.

So, now that Western Nut and the holidays are behind us, I need to find a job....and so does Aaron. Actually, Aaron had an interview yesterday that seemed to go really well, so, we'll see. And hopefully I can be a little more diligent with the blog.

A Story Problem....

There was a man, he had a job making pretty good money. He had a family - a very cute one - so he had health insurance through his job. He paid about $60.00 a month for this health insurance, which really wasn't a lot, especially since he had the money to pay it.

This man, along with some other co-workers, got laid-off! Not only did he get laid-off, but he didn't get any severance or anything! He did however get to keep his families health insurance through the end of the month.

Now, the important thing to remember here is the man now has NO INCOME, $0.00. Luckily he and his wife have very little debt and some savings. However, the man and his wife want to use the savings to pay the mortgage and utility bills and such, you know, because they probably don't want to lose their house or freeze to death.

The man's wife lovingly figured out what they need to do for health insurance. The 'nice' insurance company sent the family (literally, it was addressed to the entire family) a letter stating that they would LOVE to help the family out for $1,000.00 a month!

Now, for the story problem;

If a man has no income, how does he pay $1,000.00 a month for health insurance?

and....

Why is it that he only had to pay $60.00 a month when he could probably afford to even pay a little more?

Now, it is absolutely no secret that I have a major problem with the American health care system, no secret at all! Just put yourself in my shoes (if you know me well, this won't be hard), and think about how I am feeling about it now. Lot's of bad words are going through my head. Just thinking about it before made me frustrated, but now that it knocks on my front door.......

ARGH! *%#^@!


When Christmas/Western Nut is over, I will be getting a job, but we all know that I am not going to get paid that well, but I will take a small pay for good insurance!

Aaron has a bunch of leads and contacts. We are praying that he will find a job soon. We have found that companies are not hiring right now, in the middle of the holiday season. Maybe after the new year we will have better luck. Keep us posted if you hear of anything.

CHINA!!

Not to make excuses or anything........But I'm gonna! Here is my list of excuses;

*Piper is in rehearsals for Captain Bree (link on sidebar).
*My Kiosk opened, so I'm at work a lot.
-I needed to find employees
-I needed to get everything in order with the kidlets and home (actually this still isn't done).
*We pulled the kids from their Psycho Private School.
-A hard decision that was a long time coming.....you can only put up with so much for so long.
*We had to register them in the neighborhood Public School (our options are few, but we feel VERY good about this decision).
- I am so amazed and appreciative. The school's faculty and staff have been fantastic, they are making this transition much easier than expected for my kidlets. In fact I have gotten much more communication from this school in one week than I got from their old school in over three years!
*Aaron is either at work, in school or studying (this is a constant, but it will all be worth it....he's done in April!).
*Not to mention everything else that goes on in the everyday life at the Salazar home.

So, I'm pretty sure that isn't all of my excuses, but it is enough for you to get an idea of our crazy life!

I thought that I would give you a quick rundown of China, then since we have over 1,000 pictures, I would give you a link so you can look at them. Then, if you have any questions....let me know and I will do a separate post with the answers!! That is if you have any questions!

And, this post will be long since I am covering our entire trip. So, if you want to skip down to the end and just look at the pictures, that is totally fine with me....you will however miss out on my outrageous sense of humor, and my keen ability to describe our many adventures.

We left on Oct 16, we had to meet at the Salt Lake International Airport no later than 6:30 p.m.. Everybody was so excited, the energy was so high. We had a really nice flight to LAX. Once there we had to go to the other side of the Airport (we literally walked for about 20 minutes), to the Korean Air terminals, our layover felt like it was forever, I think it was over 2 hours. We finally boarded our plane, and guess who was on it.......DAVID HASSLEHOFF...not that I am a fan, at all, it was just kind of cool. The kidlets thought it was awesome! They know 'The Hoff' from SpongeBob.

After our 12 hour flight, we landed in Korea. It was about 5:30 (I think) in the morning. We were able to get an Internet connection, so we got to talk to the kidlets, we even got to see them because they were borrowing grammies Mac and we had Aaron's. That was neat. The Korean Airport had the most amazing toilets I had ever seen....little did I know how much I would appreciate that 10 days later.........By this time everyone was tired and cranky and our energy level was very low.

Finally we boarded our flight to Hong Kong and got there in the afternoon. Guess what! No resting time, we immediately started doing the whole tourist thing! And, might I add here that we still had on the same clothes (and underwear) that we were wearing when we left Salt Lake? Not just Aaron and I, but ALL 48 of us.

Things we did in Hong Kong;

*Took the 20 minute cable car ride up to see the Big Buddha on the top of the mountain, it was very cool. Aaron and I paid the extra money to hike up the stairs (I know, a shock to all of you that know me). I need to add here that is wasn't that hot, but the humidity was disgusting. I was sweating SO bad, probably more than the rest of the 47 people combined. I know that you are thinking I am exaggerating, but it is true. I had to buy a new shirt.

*We went to the Market. Very Interesting. This is where Aaron got a stamp, and we got some jammies for the kidlets.

*The city does a light show every night at 8:30. All of the buildings have lights on them. Music starts playing and all the lights start going crazy for about 15 minutes. Very cool, a little over the top.

*Victoria Peak, we went to the top of a mountain that that had an incredible view of the entire city, it was amazing.

*We went on a Boat Ride. It showed us all of the fishermen and the families that actually live on their boats a fish for a living. Interesting.

*Aaron and I had full body massages. I LOVED mine, however Aaron hated his. My masseuse actually walked on me. The following day I got a foot massage.

*We went on an entirely too long train ride that was suppose to be a tour of the city.......Our tour guide scheduled it so he could rip us off.

*One of the places that we ate at put some squid down on the table that was still moving! That is when I knew FOR SURE I was going to struggle with the food.

*Outback Steakhouse! I was thrilled.

We flew from Hong Kong to Xi'an, a nice short flight.

My overall thoughts of Hong Kong;

*Claustrophobic is the first word that comes to mind. So many people, so many buildings, so little room. I felt like I could reach out of the bus and touch the buildings...we were on the highway.

*If the land was not covered, it was green and beautiful.

*I loved that they drove on the wrong side of the road!

*I loved that there was no communication barrier. Everyone spoke English.

*It was pretty Westernized.

Things we did in Xi'an;

*We checked into the hotel and the first thing we did was get Aaron's haircut. Wow. It seriously too forever. And it was like 11:00 at night.

*Terracotta Warriors are pretty neat. The whole story behind them is pretty amazing. The old dude that discovered them 30 years ago was there, but he was a mean old man. We were there entirely too long, but it was still cool. We meet some High School girls from England there, they too were doing a business tour. They thought it was pretty funny that the students with us were all old (25-37) and still going to school.

*This is probably the only 'business' meeting that I will bring up because it was amazing. We went to this Beer Distribution place. Holy Smokes. Talk about a lot of beer. For a little Mormon girl like me it was pretty amazing. I have never seen so much beer in my life.

*We went to the city wall, unfortunately it was raining like crazy, otherwise we would have ridden bikes on the wall. This is where we learned about the Dragon Horse; what it meant, where it is suppose to be in your house, the direction it is to face etc.

*We had 'Chinese Foot Massage' almost the entire group had this done, it was quite funny. Again, Aaron hated his, but I LOVED mine.

*We went to one of the oldest Pagodas/Temples in China, it was eight stories (? I think). We lit some candles in front of it and blessed someone while we did so. And guess what? Again, we paid the extra money to climb to the top, and yes, I did it. There was beautiful views of the city.

*We went to a club downtown that was a lot of fun.

My overall thoughts of Xi'an;

*It was dirty, smoggy and stinky. We could not see the sky or the mountains.

*There were bicycles and scooters everywhere. And I mean everywhere.

*There were a lot of beggars, I thought that was interesting.

*I think everyone smokes.

Things we did in Shanghai;

*We went to the TV Tower, some of you may know this building because of its three balls. It was kind of cool, there was a pretty amazing view from the top.

*This silk factory had a pretty hysterical fashion show. But it was really neat to see how the silk was made, and of course we spent some money there.

*We went to some pretty amazing gardens (again, I can't remember the names. We do have the itinerary, but I'm at work, it's at home), they were beautiful and they lead to a market. We got a couple of things there.

*We went to one of the most fabulous restaurants that I have ever been to, and had one the most amazing steaks that I have ever had. We also went to a bakery that had the most amazing eclair. They were in a mall type thing that all American malls should strive to be like. Except for there was a picture of the Statue of Liberty with "Miami" written under it.

*We went to WalMart! I know, I know, I vowed I would never go, however, I didn't have a choice, everyone went, and don't worry, it was dirty, stinky, messy and gross. It may be the same as the ones here in the states.

*We met at a University that works closely with Westminster and went to lunch with some of the students.

My overall thoughts of Shanghai;

*Much cleaner than Xi'an, but still very smoggy.

*Still tons of bicycles and scooters.

*Again, everyone smoked.

*It seems as though they are trying to Westernize this city.

We took a Train ride to Beijing, and it was great, I took an Ambien and slept the entire time.

What we did in Beijing;

*We went to the worlds largest KFC for breakfast. However, they didn't serve any chicken! For breakfast at least.

*We went to Tiananmen square, however we didn't actually get in because there was a summit going on. There were tons of guards out so it was still pretty interesting. It's amazing to me that Mau Se Tung is absolutely everywhere. What an interesting man. We could have gone the next day, but it was closed.

*The Forbidden city is huge and very repetitive, we just kept going and going and going, but it seemed as though we were in the same place the entire time.

*Pearl Market and Jade Market. We all know I was excited about this! They weren't really that interesting except that I got new real pearl earrings and ring for pretty inexpensive and a pair of real purple jade earrings.

*I think it was called 'The Temple of Heaven' It was pretty neat. We only stayed at the actual temple long enough to look at it, but on the way up it was pretty neat, there was this area where people would sing, dance and play instruments, just for fun. There was also places you had to walk through to get there, one called 'Echo Wall.' Don't worry, it didn't echo, well a tiny bit, we were all looking forward to this boisterous echo, and....nothing. This place has NOTHING! We, have the Tabernacle.

*The Silk Street Jade Market was the most fabulous place to shop! Aaron is fantastic at negotiating. We left with so much crap, it was awesome. about 7 floors full of imitation EVERYTHING. I highly recommend this place.

*The Great Wall of China. Really, this should have it's very own post. This is an experience I will NEVER forget. In fact, I am going to do a Great Wall post. I will do it either tomorrow or Wednesday......I promise.

*We went to the dumpiest hotel ever to watch a gymnastics show. It amazes me how this little gymnasts can make their bodies move like that. It was pretty amazing.

*I know this is what you have been waiting for. We saw the birds nest and the water cube and the other Olympic stuff that was around these two most poplar sites. It was pretty surreal being right there.

My overall thoughts of Beijing;

*It was clean, I could actually see the sky!

*Not as many bicycles and scooters.

*It's pretty Westernized.

*Mau Se Tung is everywhere, and it amazes me that some Americans (that were with us) don't know who he is!

*Still, lots of smoking.

We flew back to Korea, then to LAX, then home. There is a 14 hour time difference, but we got home at about 7:30 Utah time on Oct.27. Jet Lag sucks, but it was so good to be home.

And, I want to share some overall thoughts of some of the things that were constant throughout the entire trip;

*Chinese people have no manners. They fart, belch and hack loogies wherever and whenever. They tell you exactly what they think of the way you look.

*The architecture in China is absolutely amazing! I think America should venture outside of the mundane sky risers and get some ideas from the Chinese.

*I am so incredibly thankful that I can sit on a toilet. I don't squat well, so I didn't! I would literally hold it all day so I wouldn't have to! And, I am so glad that I use toilet paper.

*I think it is interesting that the Chinese don't necessarily believe in a God, or Higher Power. It seems like everything is based on Chi, Numbers and Symbols. Everything has to be facing the right direction. You have to live on a certain side of the city. You need to believe in lucky numbers, like 8, etc....I'm not sure how this is actually working for them.

*They have traffic laws, but nobody follows them. Pedestrians don't have the right of way. When I say that they don't follow the laws, I am completely serious. It doesn't matter if the light is read or green or if there is a Stop or Yield sign, they just drive. I have never been so scared that I was going to die as I was in the taxi's.

*Negotiating is awesome. My life would be so much cheaper if I could only negotiate.

*The English Translators need to do a better job! It was very interesting what some of the signs said.

*I have never been so thankful for McDonalds in my entire life. It was hard for me to even look at the food, let alone eat it! And, they eat the same thing every single day. I can only handle so much rice. And...everything seemed to be fried, in what? I don't know.

*It seemed like most of the Chinese people we met, hated President Bush.

*Whenever you take a picture of a Chinese person they do the peace sign and tilt their head. I tried to show them how to do the Rock sign, it only worked a couple of times.

*Chinese children are the most adorable kids (besides mine...of course) on the face of the earth!!

Lagoon

It was $10.00 more expensive this year than last year, but so worth it. We did the usual, we started out at Dracula's Castle,

The Scrambler,

and The Tilt-A-Whirl,

usually by this time we go to lunch, but we still had a few minutes before lunch started, so Piper and Aaron went on The Rocket

while Teague and I went on The Flying Aces.

Then off to lunch! Usually the hot dogs are scrumptious and anyone who knows me knows that I love a good hot dog (I never use to admit that, for some reason it was embarrassing, but not anymore!), however the hot dogs this year were absolutely positively horrible! I could only gag down two bites, normally I can eat two to three, sometimes four hot dogs...no problem, but not this day! ARGH! I couldn't even 'make' the kidlets eat theirs. So we ate tons of chips to hold us over. Aaron said that the Hamburgers were okay (I don't like Hamburgers.....I know, I know...it's strange). This is the kidlets sittin', bein' cute while Aaron finished his hamburger.

So, we continued on...Grammie Annie came and met up with us after we had done some more rides. We got a huge Snow Cone, of course each kidlet wanted their own, we finally talked them into one SnowCone with two flavors.

Grammie said that she would take Teague to KiddieLand while Aaron, Piper and I did some of the other rides. We went on the old white Roller Coaster - my very favorite - and we loved it. We were on our way to Turn of the Century when Aaron realized that his phone wasn't in his pocket. So we went back to the Roller Coaster to see if it happened to fall out. They stopped the ride while a ride operator walked the premises looking for Aaron's phone, everybody in line was quite upset. They were taking for.ev.er, so I told Aaron that he and Piper should just go over to the other ride and I would meet them there. A few minutes later the ride operator came back cradling an object in his hands as if it were a small animal that was hurt. Um...yeah...it was Aaron's phone....broke into a billion (okay 5 0r 6) little pieces! I started laughing and told the guy 'Thank you.' Who does this happen to? ........The Salazars, of course.

I met Aaron and Piper in line for the next ride and handed Aaron his phone with a smug smile. He looked at me and rolled his eyes. The battery was even bent, nothing salvageable, except - luckily - the sim card and picture card. Aaron and I have the same phone (cheesy, I know!), only different colors, so we put the picture card in mine and we put everything else in a pocket in the bag we had.

So anyway.....we spent the entire day there. I took tons of pictures, but chose a few to post. Aaron and the kidlets went on the carousel, I go on it sometimes, but it is the one ride that I really don't like.


And we let the kidlets go on a few rides all by themselves.

Oh, and this is what happens when you ask the Salazar kidlets to pull a face for a picture.

The entire day Piper kept bugging us about going on The Log Flume and Rattlesnake Rapids. We told her that if we did go on them, they would have to be at the end of the day so we weren't walking around wet all day. We went on them when there was absolutely no line and it was dark and getting cold. We (Aaron & I) were secretly hoping that they would be closed. We did The Log Flume and we all loved it, none of us really got wet, maybe just a little. Then we went over to Rattlesnake Rapids. We were dodging all of the waterfalls like pros, until we hit the major one. Aaron tilted just so, Teague and I were soaked! Piper and Aaron...not so much. It was definitely the funnest ride of the day, we thanked Piper profusely for making us go on it.

On the way out, we let the kidlets play Whack-a-Mole. Of course Aaron and I helped so both could leave with a prize.

WHAT A FUN DAY! But what are we going to do next year? Aaron will be done with school, so we won't be able to go on Westminster Lagoon day for $10.00!!!! I really don't want to pay $140.00 for my little family.......maybe passes?
