NPR and Oldies

When I am driving to school in the morning, I generally listen to "Radio from Hell on X96 with Kerry, Bill and Gina" (you like how I included the entire title?). Mostly because I am not ready for music yet, with it being morning and all. But, when it ends I will switch over to NPR, 90.1 and listen to "The Diane Rehm Show."

On the drive home I listen to either "Fresh Air" or "The World." On Fridays, "Science Friday." Sometimes the things that are being talked about don't interest me, or I am already bored of the subject.

SO GUESS WHAT I DO!?!?!?

I switch it over to "Oldies 94.1." OH MY GOSH! I use to like to listen to it because they played the music that I loved from the 60's (that's 'oldies' right?) and 70's (sorta old) But, I was driving along singing to the songs that were popular when I was in Jr. High School and High School!!! U2, Erasure, David Bowie. (those are not oldies right?) I did a double take. I looked down at the radio to make sure that I was indeed listening to an "Oldies" station. YES I WAS!!!

What does this mean? Really, I want to know, because...

I AM NOT OLD!!!

I do not live in a retirement community. I do not have grand kids. I don't wear black socks and white shoes. I do not have blue hair. I don't even use a cane.

How do you feel when you hear the songs of your youth on an OLDIES station?

MM's
1- Talk Radio (this may indicate that I am old!)
2- Radio from Hell (this may indicate that I am young!)
3- Oldies songs (Even if they are from my youth)

The Shhh word

This is a conversation Teague and I had recently

TEAGUE:
(happily)
Mom, I gotta go poo really bad, so can I say the Shhh (said as if telling some one to 'be quiet.") word?

ME:
(shocked. However, trying not to laugh)
What? No, you may not say the Shhh word.

TEAGUE:
Why?

ME:
Because it is a bad word and we shouldn't say it.

TEAGUE:
(begging)
But mom, I gotta go poo really bad...so can I just say the Shhh word?

ME:
(firmly)
NO!

TEAGUE:
(with urgency)
Please mom, I gotta go poo really, really bad, so I gotta say it!

ME:
(matter of factly)
No Teague! Please don't say that word.

TEAGUE:
(disappointed)
Awe man!

MM's
1- Wondering where he heard that word, when actually....I know.
2- It's funny he ask me
3- That he didn't actually say it
4- That it would have been hysterical if he did
5- the word poo

Dumpster Diving

Okay, not really!

It was more like...

Trash Can Sifting.

I was sitting in the lobby of the Babcock Theatre waiting to go into class when in the trash can I noticed some wire that had been thrown away. So, being the good mom that I am, I sifted through the trash and pulled all the wire out.

For Teague.

He loved it.

Many have asked

But I have not answered!

Sorry.

It's not that I am ignoring you, it's just not something you want to say NO! to over and over and over and over again...We've been saying NO for nearly TEN LONG MONTHS!

It's getting old.

Do you realize we could have conceived, carried and birthed a baby by now? Which by the way is impossible.

NO! Aaron does not have a job yet. He has had several interviews...several. A few times it has come down to 'him and the other guy,' and for some reason they choose 'the other guy.' I'm starting to think it is SO MUCH WORSE to get that far....then SHOT DOWN! Than it is to just not interview at all.

Yeah, it's worse.

This hasn't been easy.
No question there.
*Unemployment only lasts until the first of December (luckily...when we first got it, it was only good until June)
*It's hard to see a husband that has worked his butt (I really want to use a different word - ass) off for years going to school so our future will only be better, when really it is looking...not so hot.
*It's hard to have to tell the kidlets NO! over and over and over because we can't afford it right now.
*It's hard to go to school everyday knowing that I am doing something I have wanted to do forever and that I am LOVING it, while he is trying to find a job.
*My nagging has got to be getting old for him.
*It's hard to see my husband feel like he isn't contributing, when that's all he wants to do.
*It's hard to sleep at night.
*It's hard pay my tithing week after week and my Fast offering monthly.
*It's hard to fast and not see results.
* It's even getting hard to pray (something that has always come easy for me)
*Honestly, it's getting hard to keep my faith.

I mean really! How much time has to pass? What lesson is it that we have to learn? How many times do we have to get shot down?

Do you realize that my husband is a fabulous person? A loving father and husband? A hard worker? Hysterical beyond words? Smarter than anyone I know? and more? He also has a freaking MBA. I just felt like I had to throw that out there.

Sorry this is such a downer, but sometimes, you just have to get it out before it EXPLODES!

This...

Software Developer 37042 position, with the Scient Comp & Imag Instit-Oper at the University of Utah

...is a position that he applied for in August. His resume/application has been forwarded to the hiring department for consideration (on Sept. 3). They say the process can take A FEW WEEKS OR LONGER! I know...freakin' crazy.

And, since we are now in the 21st century, there are no phone numbers he can call, no other information than "your application has been forwarded to the hiring dept. for consideration."

This is where all of you come in! Any of you know anybody in this particular dept at the U?

Or really anything for that matter?

It's not only the U that sends out e-mails like this with no other information! It's also the VA Hospital, Primary Childrens, ARUP pretty much all jobs. Really, it sucks.

Aaron and I and our families are not the type of people that "know" people...if you know what I mean by that. We are now in a situation where we are wishing we had a prominent uncle, father or even friend. We are wishing we had connections.

I'm hoping that maybe YOU DO.

MM's
1- A good family
2- A good ward
3- Wonderful friends
3- KNOWING THAT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE for him to be unemployed FOREVER!

Feeling STUPID

Have you ever just had one of those days, when everything you say sounds like you are totally uneducated and STUPID?

Yeah? Well, I had one of those days recently. In one of my classes we were having a very heated debate about something that I am sort of passionate about. A topic I have even researched and know a lot about.

{Of course, I'm not going to bring it up here...you know...controversy}

I have a strong opinion on the matter, but every time I opened my mouth, I sounded like one of those people that think they have an opinion, but don't know why. One particular person had very strong opinions opposite of mine. This person actually had some very strong arguments and sounded SMART. Which made me feel and look even stupider (or more stupid, which ever you prefer)

Even before we got to the debate, I kept asking really stupid questions and making stupid comments about things in the text book.

This is for my SUU roomies;

Remember that really stupid old lady in our business class that we made fun of? Well, that was me this day....

Karlyn

Some may say, including myself (please don't tell my mother), that it is spelled wrong. Technically it is.

Most of you that read my blog know me, so you know how my name is pronounced.

Some of you know me through my blog and facebook and such, but might not know how my name is actually pronounced. You probably think you are saying it correctly.

There are some that read my blog that don't know me at all and most likely assume that it is pronounced differently than it actually is.

So, I thought I would clear this up!

My name is pronounced

CAR

(like an automobile)

LYNN

(like Loretta)

Not;

Carolyn

Carlin

KerLoin

(that is what my HS civics teacher called me)

Caroline

Carleen

Care-lin

Care-lynn

Karalynn

Karen

nor,

Kerilynn

It is pronounced Carlynn (technically the correct spelling) So, there you have it!

MM's

1- My name
2- different (yet spelled correctly) names
3- that it doesn't bother me when people say it wrong. Really it doesn't.

"He said...

BALLS!"

Yes, yes he did. He said "balls." He also said; "fielding," "catching," "runs," "bases," "hits" and a bunch of other baseball terminology.

However, the pop-off jock in my writing class found it hysterical that our professor said balls at all. So, he took it upon himself to say out loud...

"Ha, Ha. He said balls!"

To which our professor immediately replied, "Yes, I did say balls. That kind of stuff doesn't phase me." Then he continued on with the lecture.

Okay.

Our professor said balls. I'm pretty sure that the pop-off jock was not the only one that found that quite funny. However, he was the only one that laughed or said anything.

I may be showing my age here, but...Wasn't that a little disrespectful? Usually if you are in college, it means you are and adult (chronologically). And, I know for a fact he isn't an 18 year old freshman (not that being an 18 freshman excuses this behavior, but it would explain it a bit). I remember being that 18 year old freshman. But I'm pretty positive I wouldn't have been disrespectful to my professor during a lecture in class.

Pop-off jock,
Didn't your Mom teach you manners?

He was my boyfriend for the longest time!!!

I am taking a break from homework to do this post. So, we know it is serious stuff. Not only is it serious, but oh so silly. I am crying. Aaron just held me in his lap while I cried.

I knew this day was coming for nearly 2 years now, but still.....

For those of you that know me, you know that I have had a long lasting Lust affair with Mr. Swayze.

I will just leave you with my original Patrick Post, my Dirty Dancing Post , my crushes post (listed alphabetically) and this NPR article.

I will always love you Patrick.

RIP.

15 People in 15 minutes

Awhile back this was floating around on facebook. I was tagged a couple of times, but this is the tag that got me thinking:

"What is the best thing about 12? she's honest . . . no guessing how she feels"

I liked this answer. It made me smile.

A few days later someone came up to me in church and ask "How are you doing?" My response was, "Tired, but other than that, I am doing great, thanks for asking, how are you?"

Honestly, I don't remember the ladies response to me! I couldn't stop thinking about the response I gave her!!

"she's honest . . . no guessing how she feels"

**Do people really want to know how I feel? Do I really need to be honest about everything? I could have just said, "Fine thank you, how are you?" But I didn't!**

Ever since I was young, I have had NO problem speaking my mind, expressing my opinion...putting my foot in my mouth! It's the way I was raised. It's the way my parents and my brothers taught me to be, it's the way I had to be to survive! However, I have learned to control it a little more as I have gotten older. There are some things that I don't talk about on my blog or on facebook (like politics) because I know it will cause controversy. For those of you that I am friends with on facebook, you know that I have caused some controversy about things that I feel very strongly about. Friends have disagreed with me, tried to sway me. I don't think any differently of them, nor do I think of them of less of a friend, we all have our opinions right? I am totally okay with that. I am comfortable with that.

The question is...Are you?

What is it?

I can't quite figure it out! She is definitely not a great actress, in fact, she pretty much plays the same character in all of her movies. But there is just something about her that you like. I've had this discussion with a few people. I think we like her because she is real.

She absolutely went the way of a lot of child actors; drugs, alcohol, marrying too young, rehab, etc....She even flashed her bare boobs on the
"Late Show with David Letterman!" But she bounced back and totally redeemed herself. Not only is she acting like crazy, but she is producing like crazy, she has a very successful production company, "Flower Films."

Aaron and I watched a little movie once called
"My date with Drew." It made you like her even more. Watch it!

I remember once Richard Roeper (of Ebert and Roeper) said that she is "Adorable." I think that is it, she is just adorable.

Nine Eleven

I know I'm a little late on this one, but......

Laying in bed with my six month old when the phone rang.

It was Aaron.

He was on his way to work.

He had heard on X96 what had happened.

I turned the TV on just in time to see the second plane crash.

I called my mom, I remember asking her "Do you think this will be World War 3?"

She didn't answer.

I was on the phone with her when the first tower collapsed.

For some reason, I felt I would be more safe if I was at her house.

I went there and the 3 of us sat in silence and watched the TV.

I went home when Aaron called me and said that he was on his way home.

I remember just holding Piper...all day...

...And you?

Wednesday, September 9, 2009

I do not "mist....."

Nor do I "glisten," "glimmer," or "sparkle!"

Unfortunately I SWEAT...

...like a sow.

I hate it, but it is true!

The thing I HATE MOST about living in Utah is our incredibly HOT summers. I literally HATE them. However, this year's wasn't so bad. But I still sweated...

Wait, is that even a word?

I still sweated bad. In fact, I am still sweating bad...especially walking back and forth to class on campus! ARGH!!!

Anxiety

We all know that I have about a Billion and nine pet peeves. However, there are really only two things in this world that cause me anxiety. Sometimes I really do have a panic attack right there and then. What are these two things you ask? Well, this is hard for me because just thinking about them, I am starting to sweat and breathe heavily, but here goes....

First...and the worst...Traffic!

I seriously CANNOT handle stupid drivers. I will leave it at that, because if I don't, this may turn into the worlds LONGEST post.

Second...baggers! That's right, the baggers at the grocery store.

Honestly people, how hard is it to bag groceries? It is all I can do to not jump behind the freaking counter and do it myself. Plastic bags are the worst. It is possible to put more than ONE thing in them!! Oh, oh, oh, but now, the reusable bags!!! It's a foreign object to them....again, we don't want this to turn into the worlds LONGEST post.

So, there you have it.

2- Good baggers

3- It's okay to say a bad word (or a few) every once in awhile

Best Friend

There is nothing like having a BEST FRIEND!

These two met either at YTU or during a show at YTU. Either way, it was a few years ago and she is Piper's BEST FRIEND. They get along fabulously. They don't fight or argue or do any of that petty girl stuff and most importantly...they GET each other. I am so glad they have one another.
